The defender’s switch to the Reds was confirmed today, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance.
Vastly experienced. Araujo arrives at the Reds having worn the Barcelona jersey on 213 occasions across all competitions since debuting in 2019. Of those outings, 143 were in La Liga, while he was involved in the Champions League 35 times, including 10 games in the 2025-26 campaign. He has also scored 14 goals for Barça.
A fine medal collection. The Uruguayan’s six full seasons as part of the Barcelona squad to date yielded three championship triumphs in Spain, with title wins in 2022-23 and 2024-25 followed by another in the most recent season. His first honour while at Camp Nou came in the Copa del Rey in 2020-21, which he also won in 2024-25. Three Spanish Super Cup victories garnish his CV further.
Team of the Season. The Barcelona No.4 has twice been named in the La Liga Team of the Season. His first inclusion in the division’s top 15 players – decided by the votes of fans, captains and an expert panel – came in 2021-22. And Araujo was once again recognised for his performances during 2023-24.
Leadership at Barcelona. Araujo was part of the Barça captaincy group – as decided by the squad themselves – since 2023, when he was initially selected as the third-choice skipper. He stepped up to the position of deputy, again chosen by his teammates, a year later. Following a loan departure for Marc-Andre ter Stegen in January 2026, the armband was assumed by Araujo.
Aerially impactful. Standing at more than 6ft 2in tall, Araujo’s ability in the air is shown by statistics from the most recent campaign. Nobody in the Barcelona squad contested more aerial duels per 90 minutes in La Liga than he did (4.92). And neither did anyone win more aerial duels than Araujo, who delivered 3.31 per 90 in the league. He also registered 4.07 possession wins and 3.22 clearances for every 90 minutes of play.
Comfortable on the ball. Opta’s data also underlines Araujo’s ability when in possession. He averaged 71 open-play passes per 90 minutes of La Liga action during 2025-26 and had a success rate of exactly 92 per cent – the fourth-best such figure in the Barcelona squad.
His full name. For your records, Liverpool’s newest recruit was born Ronald Federico Araujo Da Silva. He hails from Rivera in Uruguay and entered the world on March 7, 1999.
On the international stage. Araujo achieved his senior international bow with Uruguay in October 2020 and has since increased his tally of caps to 27. He has scored once for La Celeste so far – the opening goal in a 2-0 win for his country against Argentina at La Bombonera in November 2023.
Our fourth Uruguayan. Araujo is set to become the fourth man from Uruguay to wear the Liver bird. Luis Suarez was the first, having arrived at Anfield from AFC Ajax in early 2011, and the forward was quickly followed by compatriot Sebastian Coates, who moved to Merseyside later in the same year. Darwin Nunez became the third Uruguayan to represent the Reds after he joined in the summer of 2022.
