Whereas the first meeting between the clubs on Sunday ended goalless, finishes from Cody Gakpo and debutant Jeremy Jacquet in L4 gave the Reds a half-time lead they never let go of.

With six warm-up matches under their belt, Andoni Iraola's men now turn their attention to the Premier League opener away at Newcastle United.

In a bright start, Alexander Isak twice threatened to open the scoring inside the opening quarter of an hour.

The No.9's deflected curler from the edge of the box struck the post before he was unable to bring a Gakpo nudge under his spell while inside the six-yard box.

Dominik Szoboszlai flashed wide, after Isak pounced on an underhit backpass to the goalkeeper, a couple of minutes prior to the opener.

The lead was earned midway through the half when Jeremie Frimpong drove forward to eventually clip a delivery to the back post, where Gakpo was positioned. The attacker's perfect first touch allowed him to drive the ball past Jean Butez.

A last-ditch intervention from Frimpong and low Alisson Becker save denying Jesus Rodriguez ensured that advantage remained intact.

Jacquet, who repeatedly drew warm applause for his defensive and on-the-ball work, capped off his impressive bow with his side's second goal in minute 44.

The centre-half was in position to tap home Gakpo's square after Virgil van Dijk picked up the pieces of a corner Como half-cleared.

A fellow new recruit in Ronald Araujo came on for Jacquet at the start of the second half.

Como, who have qualified for this season's league phase of the Champions League, carried more of a threat after the break.

Alisson saved from Anastasios Douvikas and Martin Baturina, while Rodriguez struck the side-netting.

The visitors' pursuit of a route back into the game did give Liverpool opportunities to counter-attack, one of which saw Isak fire off target at the end of a flowing move.

Assane Diao threatened to wipe out Liverpool's clean sheet twice in quick succession, whipping an effort just over the bar and then glancing a header wide.

In the closing seconds, Ryan Gravenberch wedged a shot out under his feet that sailed onto the woodwork ahead of Alisson batting away an attempted lob from Douvikas.
